In the guise of a precocious piano chanteuse, passionate pessimist and ill-fated romantic, Apple’s misery-loves-melody musings are still cool and sexy and quirky and original as ever, even after a six-year hiatus.Īfter being disappointed by her lover’s indiscretions, Apple has sworn off the prospect of love altogether on the damaged-goods ditty, “Get Him Back.” Apple, who wrote much of “Extraordinary Machine” in the wake of her split from Paul Thomas Anderson, the writer and director of “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia,” appears to have been driven mad by the dark side of romance. “Extraordinary Machine” comes close to being the new millennium’s best statement so far against all the contrived, deus ex machina divas out there today.
