![]() I've always stayed away from this for a music PC as I need reliability and long life although with my last PC the 'bad-caps' problem meant I had none of these anyway. ![]() I'm interested to hear the suggestion of overclocking. But really, as I've built many PCs myself in a past life I don't have a problem buiding my own - I now have a great tower case with excellent sound-proofing to drop my new CPU, Mobo and Ram into. Not that I have a heap of work at the moment, in fact it's partly financial reasons that I'm building my own PC this time! Although I have done many PC builds in the past, for the last two music PCs I've gone to a specialist (Phill Rees and Neumark). I do know about the X48 chipset, but that's a little new for me. I am intrigued with the suggestion of using a Gigabyte board and overclocking, but I have read on other forums (SOS I think) that Gigabyte stuff has more problems, I appreciate that you must have had a great experience based on your post, however. ![]() Since having a UAD-1 gathering dust (actually loaned to my partner, but same thing) I have become wary of chipset incompatibilities. I have since found other information on the new Yorkfield chips through using a more intelligent search, so sorry to anyone who thinks I've been lazy about starting a new thread.Īnyway, I'm actually now leaning towards the Intel DP35 board, as it seems to be compatible with just about anything. ![]() I'd like some nice, generally compatible firewire ports (only for storage but maybe for a new audio interface in future) LOTS of USB stems - I use a stupid amount of USB stuff these days, forget WiFi (my wife objects to the spooky electrickery all around the studio which is next to our house) and the requisite PCI and PCIe (3 each?) for the above stuff.īTW, I'd recently heard a rumour that the EMU 1820 etc would not work with the Intel P35 boards but I've also heard that the rumour was b*ll*cks. It's probably stupid to consider this as in the past I've always had to upgrade mobo and CPU (+RAM) but if I don't lose anything, I might as well go for it. However, Intel has recently launched the X38 chipset and I was wondering if anyone has experience with this set, I understand it's a little faster (not such a big issue) but is likely to be more future proof in case I wish to upgrade the CPU at a later date. I am thinking of either one of the ASUS P35 boards or an Intel P35, this one reccomended by Sound on Sound's Martin Walker. I use an EMU 1820m card and I have a UAD-1 (currently on loan to someone as the damn thing did not work on my old chipset) which I want to use on my system. I understand that the mobo I require will probably be one of the same ones needed by a Q6550 or something. ![]() I'll also be getting a mobo and RAM but I'm a little concerned about my motherboard choice. I'm looking to upgrade my old P4 3.4 to one of the new Intel Q9550 quad cores. I've tried to find anything on these new processors on the boards but nothing yet. ![]()
